we are looking for a 2-135 white. some nearby ones we found only had the 1000 pto. I need 540. I read that after serial no 280921 they all had 540/1000. is this a fact or guess. if I get one with a 1000 only, whats it cost to get salvage pto unit to convert? if someone knows of a 2-135 for sale near northeastern ky, please contact me. thanks.

Our 2-155 we can swap shafts from 540 to 1000 its just four bolts, but I don't know if you can do that with every 2-135 and 2-155

Most 2-135"s had the dual speed pto units, but some did not. The dual speed units command a pretty strong price to convert the single speed units out- I just had a 2-135 here I would have been willing to sell the PTO unit out of it. Locally, salvage yards have been getting 2500-3000 for these units- every 2-135 you see in a salvage yard have them missing, they are good property!

Like G1355 said, you take the 4 bolts out that hold the PTO shield, then just pull the 1000 out. It has a large, short spline on the inside. The 540 had a longer, smaller diameter shaft with a different spline on the end. It just goes back in farther so it drives off different gears. There's nothing to shift on those.

i am not sure how hard it would be to convert but i sure it will not be cheap. we have a 2-135 and a 2-155 and despite the fact they are basically the same tractor the 135 has a dual speed and the 155 has a perminent 1000 speed.

we had a 135 with a dual pto a few years back. I remember changing the pto like you said, but how much oil will I loose. id like to pull one out that I saw advertised as 1000 pto and have a look in there for a the other spline, but don"t want to make a complete mess and loose all the oil from the tractor.

Back it up on something or park on hill facing downhill so back is higher than front, and put a oil pan or bucket under it that's what we usually do.

I've changed mine back and forth twice a day some times. You won't loose more than half a cup.

If you take the four bolts off with the PTO shield and it exposes the outer race of the bearing so that you can pull the shaft out it has the two speed. If it is a single speed you will not be able to take the shaft out from the outside. If the soft plug is not knocked out inside the PTO and the seal is not leaking there should be no oil come out. If you're worried about oil leaking just do like mentioned earlier and point the nose downhill.

Difference in area!. Around here I doubt if the PTO on a 2-135 or 155 has ever been used on 90% of the models around here! Boys have4 Deeres from a 4430 to a 4850. The 4430 is used to mow along the road sometimes and the one 4440 is set up for 1000 RPM for a large liquid manure spreader. The other ones never see a PTO hooked to them. We had some 1750 & 1850 models that were purchased new without a PTO back when they were new.
