Oliver 1850 - 1000 to 540 PTO

I found a lot of articles on going from 540 to 1000, but none on going back to 540. I found a nice 1850 with 1000 rpm but I need 540 PTO, how difficult is this to change over? Thanks

i am no expert but i don't think it is to hard to switch over. however are you sure this 1850 is only a 1000 speed and not a dual speed pto, i would be shocked if this 1850 only has a 1000 rpm shaft. on the bottom right part of the pto there should be a little rod sticking out in the back if this is a dual speed. if it does have this then you remove the lock ring on the pto shaft, pull out the shaft, push or pull the rod, place in the other shaft, and put the lock ring back on.

Not sure it is only 1000 rpm, that's just how its advertised...I'm assuming most come with the dual speed? All I would need is a 540 rpm shaft if it is a dual speed?

as far as I know the spline stays the same, but is removed from it's current position to the upper for 1000 and back down for 540. If you look at the butt you'll see a round plate either above or below the spline. You either put the spline in the upper or lower for the differing speeds. Bottom is 540, top is 1000. Put the plate on the opening your not using.

I haven't look through it father than this, just bought an 1850.

That would be wrong. The top turns the opposite direction, and at engine speed. The bottom one runs both, you just need to shift the pto unit from one to the other, if so equipped, and swith shafts. 1000 rpm is 21 splines, 540 is 6 splines.

That was what I originally thought, until we had a need for 1000 rpm and got a shaft, and then asked about how to go about doing it.

your right, just read the owners manual. A corresponding shaft is needed and one shouldn't be used in place of the other. Not hard to do.

the 540 has restrictions, it can only be used on implements under 60 hp. The 1000 can be used for any horse power implements.

there is right after this instruction a section on using the upper "Plug" to use engine speed pto operations and a 1000 shaft is needed "to perform engine speed pto operations". Whatever that means.

I'm new to this size tractor or implements that I've had to worry about too much hp.

The engine speed PTO was there in case some one needed to power an irrigation pump some other device that was designed to operate at the normal engine speed range and rotation.

I have read that some 1850's just needed to have the 540 shaft removed and the 1000 inserted to change from 540 to 1000 is this true? The speed was changed by the length difference contacting other gears?

I thought the upper button was for engine speed only? The manual says to not use it for 540 0r 1000 and the engine speed turned opposite of PTO?.

What if it does not have the shifter rod? My pto cover looks exactly like a dual speed but not the shifter?
