Looking to buy first real tractor

I am looking to buy a tractor to work my 23 acre farm. I have found an Oliver 1850 gasser for sale and I"m looking for some opinions. It has an Oliver loader and roughly 3300 hours on the meter. Asking price is $6000. Haven"t gone to look at it yet but it appears to be in pretty good shape and is supposed to run as it should.

I was wondering what others think of this tractor and if $6000 is a reasonable price.

Thanks,

Matt

I like the big Oliver gassers. Pretty reliable but use quite a bit of gas. My opinion of value in central Mn would be; without loader, $2,500 to $5,000. The top dollar would be with excellent paint, no mechanical issues and like new tires. The low end is poor paint, poor tires and pretty worn out. Loaders are anywhere from $500 to $2,000. Lower end for a poor but usable loader. The high end would be an excellent quick tach loader. Bottom line is it's only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Thanks for the reply, prices seem to be higher here in michigan. I can"t seem to find any tractors in that size range for $2000-$5000. Those seem to be ford 8n prices around here. I"ll try to post some pictures of the oliver.

Thanks

Matt

I bought this 1365 diesel FWA from Van Paemel Equipment in Armada Michigan a year ago February for $5850. You couldn't ask for a better all around loader tractor.

We bought an 1850 gas with a loader on an auction in central MN a few years ago. We sold it the next year on the same auction for exactly what we paid for it. We were never so happy to see a tractor hit the road. The local White dealer that worked on it said sell it far enough away I never have to see it again. If I saw an 1850 gas you couldn't pay me to take that headache, and yes Galen that's my opinion of their value in Central MN.

I can tell you exactly what this ones like, I bought it. $4500 and came with the duals. Need to pick it up yet. It needs a good tune up but the motor is very quiet. Guy wasn't lying, runs like it should but I haven't move it yet.

It is big, almost too big and why he was selling, no good for cleaning out his cattle barn. Parts could be a problem.

I don't know what the buckets rated at but I wouldn't be surprised if it couldn't handle 2 ton.
Did I mention how big it was. :) They started at 9000 pounds, this ones got some big extra's. Probably over 10 tons and it's got weights.

I always look around for info and a search lead me to this thread, I couldn't believe it when I saw the pic.

If you run across another one feel free to look me up. I'll know a lot more about it after a while and we must not be far apart. I'm about 12 miles from it outside of Weston,Oh.

Look at it this way, you'll probably end up with something that doesn't use up 200 bucks worth a gas in 8 hours. Uses 8 gallons an hour. Ouch!
