I am trying to wake up my dad's 5040 from long winter nap, he has owned this tractor since new, has always started with no issues in the past..
spin the starter, no smoke, seems not getting fuel..use the primer lever on the transfer pump and whiff of ether and it starts and runs fine...shut it off and seems to lose prime, is there a check valve in the transfer pump that maybe failed? or do I need to replace the tranfer pump? seems once tractor is running, injection pump must have enough suction to get fuel to it, just when starting, no fuel seems to get to injector pump...sugestions?

thanks..

On one of my 1365 Olivers which is the same except its a 4 cylinder I replaced the fuel pump and the new one leaked so I replace it with an electric fuel pump starts right up and works great.Sounds like your injector pump is losing prime for some reason so an electric one should cure that as it'll put the fuel to it when you turn on the key not wait until you start cranking.

I did order a new transfer pump from Import Tractor, just waiting for it to cross the border...hopefully will be here within the next week.

Hope they send you the original style copper washers that go on the fittings as every time I've swapped pumps on one of those the fittings want to leak.Import tractor is a good place to deal with BTW real nice fellow there.
