Last oliver i had was 4 cylinder 99 great tractor. However Im not familiare with chain coupled later models with LPTO. How is power tranmited to rear PTO shaft with chain coupling system? Also how does Massey Harris transmit power to LPTO on 44 model tractors. Thanks fellows. As you might guess I have Cockshutt moestly

The shaft is hollow and the PTO shaft runs through the middle of it. The PTO shaft runs directly in to a splined hub in the flywheel.

The Massey 44 had transmission driven PTO. They added a clutch to one of their bull pinions. You would pull a leaver to operate the clutch that would disconnect power to the axel, hence stop foward motion of the tractor. This was called constant running PTO, not independent PTO.

The Massey 33/44, 333/444 and the Moline ZB/U/UB series all used this set up to stop the motion of the tractor and let the pto to continue to operate. This was not anything like Live Power Take Off.

You got the idea. The Oliver PTO is similar to say a Cockshutt 50 for the row crop tractors and the Super 55/550 Oliver is similar to a Cockshutt 30 in that a hub on the pressure plate drives the PTO.

Are the S55s and 550s the only Olivers where the main drive shaft is on the inside and the PTO shaft turns around it? Just curious. It's an odd setup.

As far as I know they are the only Olivers that way. It is different and takes more clutch surface since the clutch runs at PTO speed instead of engine speed. That setup works great as long as it is never slipped for more than a very short time. Our super 55 diesel was light years ahead of our row crop 70 on the combine and baler because of the live PTO.
