354 Perkins noise

I just purchased my first Oliver, 1969 1850...don't have it home yet but when test driving it engine seemed to have a bit of a rattle / knock around 1850 up to 2100 RPM...seemed to quit above 2100 RPM. Are these a noisy engine at higher RPM? Why do they run at 2400 for PTO, sounds like its screamin! Runs beautiful other than what I mentioned above. Any insight will be appreciated, new to a Perkins!

Mine is the same way you describe. Kind of how they are I believe. When you put the tractor under load the choppiness will go away, anyway that's how mine is.

I thought that might be the case...hard to load it on test drive...engine seems really smooth and quiet at lower speeds. Still seems strange they rev them so high to get 540 pto...I don't know of any larger diesel tractors that need that much rpm.

Not so strange actually. The idea was to have the tractor developing it's full hp. at PTO speed instead of 2/3 power like most tractors. It's something you learn to appreciate when running a 2 forage harvester in heavy corn.

I guess I'm not sure it isn't the chain coupler, do these commonly make noise? Is there a quick way to check it out? Thanks

Yes they do spin the engine fast at 540 pto speed. I thought after I bought the white 6105 that the 1850 wouldn't get the chopper anymore (106HP vs. 92HP) but I found out that the Oliver can handle it better than the white. Oliver probably should have beefed up the pto clutch in the 1850, almost everyone I've seen the pto spins when disengaged because the plates are warped.

They get worn and rattle, even knock of you get some slap in them. Visual inspection and listen close in that general area.

Push in the clutch at the suspect speed. The chain coupler will stop turning. If noise goes away, pretty sure its not the engine.

Positive it isn't the coupler, sure its the engine...sounds like its missing along with the knock / rattle...could I be lucky enough to have it be the injector pump or an injector rather than an internal issue?
