1550 utility

I am going to pick up a 1550 utility this weekend. Are the aftermarket front spindles good? It needs the front end rebuilt but other than that it seems to be a decent tractor. I have searched archives about mufflers under the hood but according to my serial # and the parts book it should be above the hood. I have heard these are rare but was able to pick it up for $4500 off of a farmer

If they have much wear I just weld them up and turn them down. doesn't cost me anything but time. Shouldn't cost much to pay a shop to do it either.

I bought a 1550 diesel Utility last fall and I am still learning about it and the differences between it and the other two 1550s I have. As far as the aftermarket spindle goes there about 1/2 the price as one from Agco and may not be as strong but they will work for along time.

On the muffler, All the utilities had an under the hood muffler. My hood has been cut out to use the above hood muffler and looks bad with that big hole in it. I have not been able to find anyone who lists or makes the under the hood muffler for a 1550.

You say according to the serial # and parts book it should be above the hood, Are you sure its a utility? (see pictures) The utility has a different transmission and shift pattern, smaller tires (14.9x28 or 16.9x28) and sets lower to the ground, And different floor plates and battery boxes and steps (I am missing both covers and steps). The Floyd County Historical Society doesn't have a total count on how many were made so the number is any ones guess, But not many were made. Bandit

I guess what I was looking at was the part# for the hood I always thought the hoods were different between the row crops and utilities but Serial #195765 and later used the same part number in the book. This hood appears to have a factory cut hole. The tractor I am picking up is #195921. Are the numbers in the Jan/FEB HPOCA magazine of 577 total utilities built close? It is a utility with 28" rear tires, same shift pattern as yours, and has the correct deck plate battery box and cover/step assembly on each side. I will get some picture when I get it home. Thanks for the info.

I have been trying to find a copy of the magazine no one around here seams to carry it, But that number could be right. The Floyd County people I talked with back in November didn't know and said that they were going to do a build card count to find out, So I guess they must have done it. My 1550 utility was built 2-9-66 by the build card I got from the Floyd County Historical Society. The hole in the hood on the utilities is farther forward as it used an under the hood muffler like the 77 and 88 did, So they had a different hood part number than the regular 1550s did. Glad to know there is another one out there, Still few and far between and hard to find. Bandit

Well there should be a couple of different hoods. On the 1550 you could have a hood for a tractor with a dry air cleaner or one for an oil bath air cleaner. Also I think that serial number you mentioned is because of a change in the location of the fill opening for the gas tank. Check and see if the part number for the fuel tank changed at about that time as well. When I used to do what you do we had a 550 with a loader in the shop that the front end was left without care for too long. We welded it up and had machine trades fit it to size.
