Fired up my 1600 utility today it backfired and didn"t want to start finally got it started and was missing on 5&6 changed plugs and wires no change took compression test nothing on those two cylinders pulled tappet cover and the lifters had popped of and were bent is it possible to by new one or do I need to find good used ones? Tractor ran great last week now this was this a common problem?

Yep, the modern gas seems like it can be a problem in certain cases.

Search the archives and read Soundguys stuck valve problem from a year or two ago. This was even on a tractor he recently used too.

Anyway, Since I read that I have been adding a touch of Marvel Mystery Oil, cheap 2 cycle oil, diesel fuel, kererosene, ATF, or even 303 hydraulic oil if I have nothing else to use. No logic to what I add to the gas, basically whatever I happen to have handy at the time of adding fuel.

I have no idea if it helps or not, but no stuck valves yet. My Deere model A seems to really enjoy some kerosene added to its gas.

Well we took a chance and straightened the lifters until I can find some new ones or good used one keeping my fingers crossed they will hold up until then I will take the additive advice it sure won"t hurt.

87 octane gas[especially ethanol blend] is causing all kinds of problems.A car mechanic friend of mine says he has changed numerous cat converters because 87 octane gas burns fast and hotter then higher grade gas causing converter failure
