1855 block patch

Called on a 1855 today everything sounded good except the guy said it has a patched block. He said he bought it about 8 years ago that way. Engine was rebuilt at that time. Said they did a nice job patching no leaks. Is it worth a look or keep looking, never heard of this before. Thanks

I haven't seen it on an Oliver, but the local machinery dealer had a JD4320 loaner tractor with a well-done patched block. That thing was all over the county for years (including on my farm a couple times) and it was just fine.

Used to be common on early Farmall 400s. They didn't have enough main bearings if I remember the story right. They'd get lugged down and split the block in the middle. Neighbor bought one in Archbold one time not knowing about the patch. It sold at his auction in 87. For all I know,that thing might still be going.

If you where to get the tractor and wanted a new block I have two here I would sell. One is a gas block and other is a cooler diesel block. If you or anybody is interested just let me know.

I would be concerned as to whether the main bearings are still
in line. That is not to say they will not be.

Use the patched block as an angle to get him to drop
the price. Then buy it if its a reasonable amount.

If it's a nice patch repair on the block and priced reasonable. The first thing I would do is mount a external lubrifiner filter canister on it, about a 2 gallon one. It will give you more oil capacity and the oil won't get as hot. We had one on our 1855 for over 15 years and never had engine failure.

I think if well done it could last a long time. But I think it lowers the value for sure.
