Coupling Sprocket Hardness

Due to some recent discussion, I decided to have some testing done. 155553A 1650 transmission side sprockets were tested. OEM came in at 56 Rockwell C, aftermarket was 30 Rockwell C. I guess our saying "OEM is twice as hard as aftermarket" isn't too far off.

Just for curiosity's sake, a 1850 input high range gear tested at 60RC.

Probably close to the 60 mark. With good carbide,
.005 per pass is about all you can take.

That's the same thing with those cheap aftermarket balls for the 3 pt. OEM measured about 45 RC, and the aftermarket ones were maybe 25-30.

That's why I made some of my own. Still have a bunch for sale, but the guys that bought them don't need more and since then the cheap ones have gotten even easier to find. I think I still have 10-15 pairs.

While hardness is a requirement, it is not the only consideration.
Toughness and strength are other qualities and all may be
interlinked. Absolutely no point in case hardening an otherwise
piece of junk.

However, the correct grade of steel wrongly hardened would be
expected to fail earlier than hoped, so the test provides evidence
of rubbish manufacture on that point. It may fail in another
mode as well, of course. One characteristic of the spec is
relatively easy to attain; achieving all the spec requirements at
the same time is what costs the extra for a durable replacement
part.

Brad, does Agco still sell the hollow clutch shaft,
coupler, and input shaft for an 88/880, any prices?
I know A&I does, but as you mentioned in the
rockwell test I'm skeptical in how these aftermarket
shafts and coupler hold up in comparison.

I am not Brad but I checked Agco a about a ear ago for the trans input shaft and they were not available to order. Korves has all the parts you mentioned. I don't know how they compare to Oliver parts, I guess I will find out!
