1850 Speedometer

The speedometer quit working on my 1850, it would work for a little while, bounce all over the dial and then go to zero. Took the drive gear out and checked it, looked OK. The drive cable is only about a year old and is loose in the cable housing. Got another speedometer and put it in, does the same thing. What next?? The drive gear was used, I haven't seen a new one to compare with to check for wear. I have 2 1850's, one with 34" tires and the other has 38" tires. Can I switch the drive gears to see if that is the problem or are they different drive gears? I'm running out of ideas, any suggestions? Thanks, Chris
