1559?D won't start

I have a 1550 that has always been hard starting. You have to ether it a whiff even in the summer unless it's just been running.
I can't get it to start at all. Good compression, very little white smoke - maybe a whiff.
Any ideas? Doesn't want to start on ether, although I can get it to groan a little when it's ethered.

When that happens, the first thing I suspect is the little fuel lift pump. The one that pushes the fuel through the filters.

That's a good catch there on the multiple tractors all with problems. I'd definitely start suspecting fuel issues at the main tank. Is there a filter at the pump? It won't catch everything but it'll catch a good portion of it.

I'll check fuel but doubt if that is the problem.

The 1755 was on the vac running full power and just died, as if it had the throttle pulled.

The 1550 has always been hard to start and just won't start this spring.

The 1855 weakness is new this spring.

If the 1550 is a diesel you will likely need to get the head rebuilt properly. (Seats and valves set properly). Your other problems all sound like fuel issues to me. Here in south central Pa we have found a lot of fuel issues this winter.

We have had similar issues this spring with a 1550, 1750, and 1850. Found bio-diesel had gelled, and left sludge in bottom of tanks. One required injection pump rebuild and new injectors, one needed new fuel and run for a while, and the other needed fuel tank cleaned, lines flushed, and new filters. Check your fuel source.

I have owned a 1550 diesel cense 1988 and it had 2100 hours on it when I bought it. The first start of the day all ways had to be ethered to get it to start. I bought a second 1550 diesel last fall and its the same way, and its the only way it will start.

Now having said this I will give you some things to check. 1 Being that the 1550 is gravity fed you need to keep the fuel tank fuller. 2 When was the last time you changed the first fuel filter? Maybe dirty enough to be causing a problem. 3 On the fuel line coming out of the first filter going to the second filter there is a brass nut on the line, Loosen that nut all the way off and pull the line off. You should find a rubber washer that is most likely crumbling apart and is causing it to suck air and not fuel. You can change to a new rubber washer or change the fitting out to a hose barb fitting and a piece of fuel hose and hose clamps (cut a piece of the steel line off) this will take the viberation out of the line and make a air tight fuel line. 4 Check to see if you have fuel coming out of the bleeder on the final filter and that the top of the filter is good and tight. 5 It may sound dumb but check the fuel hose going from the final filter to the injection pump, They do go bad by collapsing inside and blocking the fuel supply to the pump.

Any one of these or 2 or all can cause it not to start. Don't ask how I know, BTDT! I hope this gives you some ideas and helps you get her going. If all of these are good and still wont start let me know and I can give you something else to check as a last resort. Bandit

It is running now. The problem was probably a bad shut off cable that didn't have the pump all the way open. When I figured that out, it began starting and running again.
