Oilver 500 story

Rick Stair sent me a link to this story about the 500s and 600s from Farm Collector Magazine. Pretty good story on the history of them. I sure feel downright giddy about this little 500 gasser that I brought home.
500 Oliver story

Guess I wouldn't be too worried about that- I've seen one Oliver 500, but have never seen a DB 850 around here. Were there very many sold in the US?

I don't know if there were any 850s sold here. DB didn't sell tractors in the US until sometime in 63 and they discontinued the 850 in 65. They would have had to come from Canada, but even then Oliver had their own set of serial numbers stamped in the frame. As far as the 600s,it's simple to tell if somebody painted a 990 green. The hood was longer on the 990. They had the batteries ahead of the radiator. The Oliver 600s had them back by the seat. I'd sure like to find one of those. Definitely more Super 44s than there were 600s.

There were almost 16,000 db 850/Oliver 500 produced, shouldn't be to hard to get your hands on one.

Must be they are harder to find as you go west.

There were 1648 sold as 500s. Apparently all of the 850s sold in Europe were diesels. Here's what it said in the article: "All David Brown 850s were diesel models. Crop Master gasoline engines were used in the rebadged tractors exported to the U.S., where gasoline tractors remained popular.".

Along with this quote. An article in Hart Parr Oliver Collector in 2006 gave the same figures. "As for the deal between Oliver and David Brown, which started in 1960 and ended in 1963, 1,648 Oliver 500 models were produced, more diesels than gasoline models (all of the 1963 models were diesels)."

I contacted that guy on the Winchester craigslist last week. I wanted the badge off the front of the hood. He said he had already sold the whole hood off of it. He said he has two running tractors and those two parts tractors.

The actual Oliver shield tag was on the front of the right side battery box, just to the right of the seat. If it's missing, the number is stamped in to the top of the right side frame rail toward the front. Just behind the radiator.

I don't know. That Crop Master gas engine in mine has David Brown cast right in to the side of it.

If it looks like this and falls in that range of serial numbers,I'd say it is. The 600s had a whole different set of numbers. The 600 numbers seem to overlap the DB 990. I can't find a serial number listing for the DB 850,not on here or even on Tractor Data. Those numbers for the 500s show a few more than the 1648 if they were totally sequential, but I'd think if they overlapped, there would be a heck of a lot more numbers than that. I'm wondering if the OA designates it as an Oliver for sure?

OK,I found the 850 serial numbers. They all start with 3,so all of them with the 100 numbers must be Olivers.

Randy, there has been one for sale for most of the winter here in Eastern Ontario. Supposed to run well and is quite cheap.

I have never seen it nor do I know who is listing it. It probably should be picked up by a collector - other than me as I have my hand full with these 8 Cockshutts.
