Finally a warm weekend and some time. It's been sitting, waiting, since January. New battery and put water in the radiator. It started right up and sounded good. I let it run for a while and checked the lift and hydraulics. Lift and PTO work like they should (sigh of relief). Seemed like the cooling system only took about 3 1/2 gallons, should be 5, and it stayed full. It's supposed to get cold again Tuesday so I drained it. About 3 gallons from the lower hose but nothing from the block drain. A screwdriver poked in the drain port came out with the wet, black sludge. The same as I got back in January. The hoses to the H-P were warm. Seems like no coolant got to the back end of the block. Anybody have any ideas? There is a plug below the regulator at the same level as the draincock, is it also a block drain?

The back of the block is where the rust and dirt always resides because of the angle of the motor.

From the radiator drain the block only drains to the level of the water pump. There is still water in there.

I think I would keep poking or something.

RT (my 2 cents)

Quite right. I have removed liners and found the back end of the block almost completely filled with scale deposits. For that reason, I always leave water/antifreeze mixture in as many engines as possible. Continual draining and refilling with temporary hard water will exacerbate the build up and allow more corrosion to take place.

I never thought about the angle of the motor.just wondering does the same hold true for oil? if so would it help if you backed up an incline then the back would be higher then the front ? i have the old barn incline to the mow have to go check it out

Agreed. I would have expected any buildup to be heaviest at the back end. This is black-green sludge I think is dried antifreeze. I'm going to plumb fittings around the oil filter and put the hose to it to try to break it up. Then some cooling system flush. Then pray the sleeve seals are OK. Going to pull the other plug out and see it goes into the water jacket. I have a Buda 6 apart now and it has two holes.
