88 steering

Hi guys, I have a 1948 old style 88 standard. The steering is really loose. It makes pulling a planter and grain drill difficult to keep a straight line. The slack comes from the gearbox under the radiator. Is there any way to tighten up the loose steering. It is about a half turn of the steering wheel to get anything to move. Thanks for your help.

Well you need to check the clearance in the bearings on the wor shaftmand then check the adjustment of the sector gear. Also how much lost motion do you have in any of the U-joints and tie rods?

How do I check those things? Everything else is pretty tight. The tie rod ends are new. I can turn the steering wheel and watch and see the sloppiness is in the gear box. The shaft going into the gear box turns but the rest doesn't until I keep turning the wheel.

check the bearings of the worm gear in the steering gear box, they may be shot or just need adjusting, the steering sector gear has an eccentric in the center of it, this can be adjusted to bring it closer or further away from the worm gear. this should tighten it up a bit. while you have it open you can see the wear on the gears, they may just be too worn but not likely.
