I am changing the hydraulic fluid in my 1550 Diesel. The stuff in there looks terrible, about the color of coffee with a lot of cream! The transmission oil looked just about as bad. The manual says 10w or transmission fluid. Is 10w standard tractor hydraulic fluid? It takes 6 gallons so I think hydraulic fluid would be less expensive than auto trans fluid. I assume that anything in the 80w to 120w would be ok for the transmission. It doesn't get very cold here.

You will be O. K. Now one other thing. After the 1550's were introduced they increased the oil level in the transmission. You had to thread a street ell, a nipple and a cap in the check plug hole. If that has not been done and I will check Monday what length nipple you need when I get back home. I thought they would had gotten this modification but I found one this winter that did not have it. You just have to remember that in the 45 years since that manual was printed, the fluids have changed. If the Oliver is your only tractor, just about any hydraulic oil will work. If you have any other tractors, borrow equipment, or anything else where you may be sharing fluid between tractors, either run what they have or use a hy-tran type oil, either generic or brand name from a dealer.

I run 80-90 in the transmissions of our 1600 and 1855. For hydraulics, we use the same oil as we do in our Massey 165 and 285.

Also run hy-tran in the hydro power and hydraul units on the Olivers instead of ATF.

15W-40 in the engine, and all is well.
