e3 pto clutch plates

I picked up an e3 last spring, previous owner said pto was starting to slip the last time it was on a dyno. Disassembled it today. there are different thickness of shims in each mounting tab. Plates don"t look to bad to me. Looking for advice on removing shims or just replace. PTO will only be used/in tractor for dyno work. Tractor is supposed to be 50hp

Holly that must be highly modified to make 50 hp. Mine was 25hp on the drawbar and 29 hp on the pto with 100 rpm increase in engine reves so its legal for vintage tractor pulls when i sold it. Duane o.

How much snap do you have on the handle? 40 Horsepower at what RPM? That is an Auburn clutch I would need to do a little looking to see what it would take to make it the same as a 40 clutch.

Thank you for your ideas. I have pics but it won't show them, everything was pretty clean, nothing looks burnt or black. I think that Im going to take a few shims out and give it a try.
The pto hasn't been in the tractor in a number of years.

start with taking one out it makes quite a bit of difference. two would make quite the difference as J.W.S. said you want a good snap.

I had that problem with one of mine. I put it in a vise and turned it with a bar, both engaged and disengaged, and tried different shims until it "felt" right. It's a '46 so it has a lighter duty clutch and no brake. It works OK but I usually only run a tedder behind it. I have never been able to find a spec on how to set that clutch.
Who told you it was 50hp? If that's true I'd love to know how it's done. Be careful putting it together. Be sure the discs with the internal notches don't slip off the spider.

really no snap right now. its a 48 w/o brake, not sure if its the original pto or not.

Hi,

Originally, the unit should have had .050 total shims. It could be 5 @ .010 or 1 @.050.

I would remove ALL the shims, if you had NO SNAP FEEL AT ALL!!
