Olivers at Polk's auction

Just read some comments about the auction at Polks on the John Deere forum about the auction. I checked the prices of what tractors brought off his web site. There was 2 990"s. One brought 16,000 and the other 18,000. Early super 99 GM 22,000. From the looks of the pictures of them I guess my 990 should of brought about 25,000. I guess that why I'm selling JD 830 to buy a 1900-1950 mfwd Oliver.

I thought the su 99 was a bit high,without a serial number . the
1800 on terra tires brought double what it did in florida, not bad for
the seller considering it had a 302 motor from a 99 in it.

Larry,

Your did a great job of restoring that 990. I have one that I restored 4 years ago. I've had the large port engine rebuilt with high compression pistons,4 valve head, and N70 injectors. I'm thinking about the same value as you are for mine. Here is a picture.

In my experience, what brings out the big bucks is these tractors having the original 2 valve GM engine. These old engines are getting a little hard to find and really make the complete restoration.

The 4 valve DD engines are plentiful and do make some more power. Most true Oliver collectors reduce the tractors authenticity when they see the DD badge cast on the block rather then the original GM badge.

After hearing this I am glad I didn't toss my old engine when restoring my 990. I really think I spent a lot of unnecessary extra cash and time rebuilding a 4 valve DD. I only use my 990 for pulling so the repower was needed.

Very nice tractors by the way.

I also kept my old engine. What catches my eye a lot more than what block the engine has is the half a--ed restoration job that 95% of the ones I've seen had done on them. I have never seen a nice restored one with DD block at any auction sell. I have seen a quite a few of the ones with the gm block sell for 6 to 20 grand. When I go to shows and auctions I always take a close look at the one that stand out, regardless what color.

I agree with you as to the extent of the restorations out there. The 990 Oliver is my favorite and I really pick them over when checking them out at auctions and shows. I also personally put a high value on farm fresh tractors that have been taken care of their entire life.

I notice you have the optional seat back on your rig. Did you have to hunt that down or did it come with the tractor? I just can't seem to find one anywhere. I am also looking for a belt pulley attachment for the pto.

I had to hunt the backrest down. Very hard to find. Took a year to find. The one I found had set out and froze and split. I had to pull it back together and braze up the seam. I then gave it to my body man buddy and he worked his magic on it. I seen anotherone at an auction on a junk seat. I quit bidding on it at $80. They are great to grab onto for getting on the tractors. Larry
