1850 pto clutch

going to be replacing the pto clutch pack in my 1850. how big of a job is this gonna be? is there any tips or tricks i should know before i start. also I priced my parts through agco is there a better cheaper source for future repairs.

I just pulled mine out, not to big a job. Lots of oil to drain, use a big tub. You have to pull the PTO drive shaft first! Remember to take the o-ring out before the shaft, it's a little beyond the snap ring. I used a 1/2x13 8" bolt to drag the PTO drive shaft out. It takes a bit of fiddling to get it out. It's really long. I used a engine hoist to pick the PTO unit out, heavy for one guy. It's heavy to the front, I used two bolts at the upper shaft hole. Do you have a manual with a cut away? It helps. It might help to weld a nut on the 1/2 inch thread that goes in the pto shaft. Then, use an impact wrench on low to vibrate the shaft while pulling it out. Makes it very easy to get it out.

On the upper 2 cone head bolts install two pieces of threaded rod or long bolts without heads so you can tip and slide the unit back, BUT before you do that loosen the large plug that you remove so you can adjust the clutch and remove it.

I still have my PTO unit out, what's the reason for taking the adjustment access plug out? I didn't so what do I need to know? Thanks, PK

When you put it back together you look in there through the hole to see if the fork engages the throwout bearing. do a rough adjustment first so you will be close. Then use the opening to fill the transmission. How much do you use the PTO?

Don't mean to hijack the thread, at least it's related. I use the PTO quite a bit, I run my round baler with it. PK

Removing the large plug is a good idea. Sometimes they are really stuck in there. I have had to heat around it with a torch. If you have to use a torch, do not be afraid to heat around the plug to red hot.
