Can someone tell me what I can do for an oil leak where the head mates to the block on a 453?Not the first 453 engine to do this. This one has a turbo, its on a piece of railroad equipment.

Maybe I'm not thinking right but don't they usually leak coolant between the head and block, not oil?

I made a living chasing TS-14 and TS18 Euclid scrapers around, if it ain't leaking oil, must be way low!

The 4-53 has oil passage seal rings in counterbored holes in the top of the block. The oil passages provide oil to the rockers arms, exhaust valves and cam followers. The seals wear and oil starts seeping between the head and block. My 1950gm did the same thing.

Pull the head and replace the square cut o-rings between the head and engine. What are you working on? Tie handler, ballast regulator, TKO, tamper?

ballast regulator, kershaw 46-2 has about 6600 hrs on it.not real worried about it,but have a couple of 1950's that will run again someday.Would like to know if its practical to try to control the leaks.

replace all square cut O"rings on the top of block then on just the very outside o"ring should have green paint on one side (to aid in making shure ther are no twists in it!!) use some 3M adhesive on the bottom of ring grove in the block this will help keep it there then apply a SMALL amount of silicone to the top of this o"ring ONLY PAINTED side up allow to JUST BEGIN to set up then put head on evenly. rember to draw down with bolts on cam follower side befor it touches the deck this head will not just sit evenly on the deck becase of the cam followers
