super 77 diesel batteries

Hey guys, new here. I recently inherited a 1958 Oliver super 77 with a 6 cyl diesel. I am NOT a diesel mechanic but I am ok with my own vehicles. This tractor will definitely run but it's been years since I can remember my uncle using it. He's been gone 1 1/2 year now so it's been at least that long. It's in his shop and there are no batteries in it. I'm wondering what I'll need to do to get it running? It has a spot for 2 batteries. What size should I use? The serial number of the tractor is 28289-705 but I looked it up and it is not listed anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It is ment for 2 6volt batteries in series to make 12 volts. Also its positive ground unless its switched to an alternator. One 12volt battery that will fit in the slot is plenty as bock said just make sure its positive ground if its got a generator on it and you will be fine. Pump or drain the fuel out of the tank and filters and refill them that will help it fire up easier as well. Hope that will help you with your project duane o.

That is a 1955 Super 77. The Super 77 starts harder than a Super 88 in my opinion. If you are going to use one battery get a block heater! Also how long has it been since it was started last? I would make the screw driver test on the injection pump before you even try to turn the engine over and that includes turning it with a socket or the starter. You break that injection pump plunger off and kiss $8.00.00 GOOD BY. 28 289 is the serial number, 705 number means it has a slow speed rear end. More questions? J.

Batteries are classified in different groups based on CCA(cold cranking amps), voltage, and terminal location and style.
I use a single group 31(750 CCAs) battery in my Super 88 diesel. It is one of the highest CCA batteries available with the top terminal style you need. When I was a parts man at our local JD dealer the group 31 battery was used in all the newer tractors and combines. According to my Consumer Reports magazines, the Everstart brand from Walmart performs well and is cheaper in price than an Exide or Interstate battery brands.

Also keep in mind all Oliver 77/88-770/880 diesels are 12 volt positive ground from the factory. If it still has a generator it should be positive ground. If it has an Alternator it could very possibly be negative ground. Find out for sure before you install the battery or you will see fireworks!

Thanks for the info guys. It's been sitting for quite a while. I'm thinking it was last started maybe 3-5 years ago. Luckily he always kept it inside the shop. I may just get one of the local diesel shops to come get it and go through it. With my luck I will break something if I try to start it. It has an alternator or generator but it's not hooked up. There's one old wire hanging off a terminal that's not going anywhere.

John what do you mean by screwdriver test? Had an 880 diesel that was seized and gave it a rock back n forth and heard a loud crack and turned no problem after that. Hope thats not what broke. Duane o.

What I find on another AGCO owned brand about the same displacement/HP is it will start on one 1000 CCA battery in warm weather no problem. There was room for two 1000 CCA batteries and it will start without being plugged in with just a sniff of ether well below 0.
