Cockshutt 40 axle seals

Im replacing the axle seals on my 40, I read the procedure in the I&T manual but its very vauge. I pulled one of the axles out but it looks like I shoulda just pulled the hub. Ive read that the hubs can be difficult to get off so should I put axle back in then remove the hub or remove hub with axle out? Does anybody have the torque spec for the inner and outer axle nuts? Thank you.

I haven't had mine apart but it looks like the flange has to come off to change the seal. Since the shaft is out it may be easier to have it pressed out. As far as the torque, I would just put the nuts back to where the cotter pins are in the same slot.

Thanks Phil, where does the O ring go? I looked things over closer and I see another seal on the inner side of the axle where the axle housing bolts to the rear end. It looks to me like this seal keeps the gear oil out of the axle housing and the seal behind the hub keeps the gun grease from going into the axle housing. I have prolly 1/2 gallon of gun grease in housing. So you need to replace both of these seals or you will fill the axle housings with gear oil, so you do need to remove the axle and the hub to do both seals. Just not shure where O rings goes?

Whiskey,

The O-Ring goes on the axle last before installing to hub. The purpose of the O-Ring seal is to prevent oil/grease from following the threads to the outer castle nut.

I would replace the inner axle oil seal too, while you have everything apart.
