1550 pto housing removal

I'm trying to remove the pto clutch then the pto housing so I can replace the oil seals inside for the bottom end of the three point. I am trying to remove the clutch as my completely worthless I&T manual says with no luck. Any suggestions for this job? Also any suggestions for a good manual? I'm going to burn this I&T garbage.

Did you remove three bolts from flange on rear end housing .I use open end wrench to get them out. There will be long shaft attached that goes all the way up to engine clutch . Hope this helps.Greg

First of all which PTO do you have the one with the dry clutch or the optional dual speed unit with the wet clutch. If the dry clutch do like Greg said, you need to remove the 3 3/8 inch cap screws behind the clutch. If the wet clutch you need to remove a snap ring.

I forgot that was optional on 1550, and I have complete dual speed pto for 1650 laying on the floor of my garage. Greg

Some times you turn shaft a little as you pull back on pto unit.I have taken my 1555 out many times.Good luck Greg

We used to have a 3 foot wrecking bar in the shop that was our "special" PTO removal tool. Position the nail pulling end behind the clutch and get the other end a little push. Also make yourself 2 1/2 inch alignment pins and thread them into two of the PTO mounting gear box holes. Slide the repaired gear box on these and then install the other two bolts not quite snug. On the older tractors that bearing also seats a little bit into the transmission case. That way everything will line up properly and then you can tighten the 2 bolts, remove the alignment pins and then install the other 2 half inch bolts.
