Threaded or welded

I just noticed that big bolt in the brace of the wide front is broken off flush in the brace itself. Does anybody know whether that is threaded in or welded?

What tractor?? That looks a lot like the wide front end on my S88 so I could look and maybe tell you if it is like that one
 
LOL yep leaving out info makes it hard for us but I will still go look since it is close to that same set up
 
Parts book(dated June, '65)that I got with my 1550 shows it as one piece with the wishbone. Yours is probably the same and I'd bet it's plug welded on the front side.
How did that break?
 
On my S88 it appears to be a part of the wish bone as in it is forged part of it
 
I don't know how it broke. I backed up with a bale on the loader and heard a little bit of a clunk. Started ahead and it moved. When I looked it was sheared off.I don't think that's when it happened,but it looks fairly fresh.Guess I'll just torch it out and weld a new bolt in it.
 
It was probably cracked for a while and finally gave up. Look on the front side opposite the pin and see if it was welded there. If that's the case you may be able to grind the weld out enough to drive the pin. Or it could be just pressed in. Either way it's probably fairly hard like a grade 8 bolt. Getting it red hot and letting it cool slowly should soften it up for drilling. I'll look at mine tomorrow and see what it looks like.
 
It's just smooth on the other side. Must be just something like a plug that it's a part of welded in the back. Shouldn't be too hard to fab something up and weld it in if I can find the right sized bolt. Might even be long enough that I can just get the piece out and slide the other half in farther and weld it.
 
btw you took the words out of my mouth if you could find a bolt same size cut the head off and put it in there weld it and hopefully all is well
 
When you get the wishbone off look real close where the pin meets the main body. It there's a small radius or fillet in the corner it's forged as one piece. If it's pressed in you should be able to see the juncture. Just me, but I wouldn't try to push the old pin part way. That would be weak in the wishbone and have only about half the threads in the nut.

The wishbone is called a "Stay Rod" in my manual. So far, every picture I see shows it as part of the stay rod. I'll keep looking......
 
It's welded. If you took a bolt and machined the read round and about 3/8" thick you would pretty much duplicate it.

The wishbone was formed and this piece was welded straight to it.
 
That shaft doesn't even go in to that brace. It's just welded to the outside. I used the angle grinder on the old weld,finished off a little bit with the torch and got it off. I cut the piece out of the "button" that was welded to the brace then I knocked the bolt back in to it and welded it back in on the inside. I welded it back on. Only thing I had to do was drill a new hole for the cotter pin in the castle nut since it was shorter. It's all back together,we'll see how it goes.

Gonna be a test of my welding skills.
I should have put some paint on it. Paint always seems to make a weld stronger. lol
 
I see you figured it out. I just got home and looked at mine and saw how it was welded on. Nice job. Should work OK. I should stop trying to give advice based on memory.
 
Don't stop! I don't want to be the only one. And your memory is probably better than mine. lol
 
Might want to put a bolt in that left inner tie rod clamp before it wears the threads out and falls apart on you going down the road.
