1555 diesel with engine vibration

I bought a 1555 diesel, haven't got it delivered yet, but the owner says it has a vibration in the rear of the engine and makes a clattering noise, it's not too bad at idle but at 12 to 1400 rpm it gets alot worse, doesn't smoke, he can't tell that it's missing, whatever it is it started all at once when in the field, anybody ever heard of such? When I get it I'll check in the oil filter and have the oil sampled. Thanks for any help.

First thing I'd check is the chain coupler and sprockets, also to see that the bell housing bolts are tight an not broke off or the ears of the bell housing or engine backing plate aren't broke. That'll let the hydrapower jump around an the chain coupler very noise. Have seen this many times! Check motor mount bolts too that they haven't shook loose.

Thanks for the info I wouldn't think there would be a whole lot wrong with just 3800 hrs. Thanks again.

Hope it is as suggested lower down in the thread.

I once had a similar problem with a diesel Landrover. The clutch pedal transmitted the problem to the foot. It was a broken crankshaft at the rear main bearing. It eventually locked up before I got it home while driving carefully. Took most of the night to change the crank and get it up and running again.

Yep,the chain coupler got bad on my 1550 one time. That thing shook so bad under load,it would jar the radiator cap loose.
