1850 pro issues and questions

Well I finally have time to get working on my 1850 diesel. last field of the last cut of hay i noticed I had to hold the pto shaft in the forward position to keep full power to the pto. if i let go it would run but it would seem to slow if that makes sense. I can thing my manual but i know its here some where. any of you have an idea as to what it may be. also do i have to pull the motor or split the tractor to work on the pto?

Sounds to me like your PTO clutch is out of adjustment. Is your PTO handle on the right or left side? How much effort does it take to "snap" the handle overcenter?

It's on the right side. It takes hardly any force to snap over center. So little it's sloppy to the point you have to hold it forward or it will slide back and forth

You should have lets say without me looking it up at least a pull of 35 pounds on the end of the handle. Adjust it before you ruin the clutch plates if you have not done so already.

Just what JS said.

There's a plug that you take out of the housing in back. You push a pin in with a screwdriver and turn a notched collar. Not hard to do,you just need a manual to know how to do it.

Worst case if I had to replace the clutch pack do I have to split the tractor to get at it or can I access it by removing the rear pto housing

The clutch pack is in back. I can't think of any situation where you'd have to split the tractor to do anything to it.
