Cockshutt 540 Flywheel Update

I went back to work and measured the flywheel studs. Their shanks are 0.400", and they are threaded for 3/8" nuts. The crank may be out of another Continental engine. Does anyone know the flywheel torque specs? I will be putting this tractor back together tomorrow.

Studs and nuts? Bolts (and nuts)?

Always been high tensile capscrews in every engine I have taken apart, or rather put together, so this is new to me.

Only ever had one flywheel come loose - broken mild steel bolts. That was a car engine I bought as a short engine, so not down to me. Luckily it did not let go completely and was retained in the bell housing.

Failure at that torque is alarming. First check your wrench calibration.

Well like I said before Continental has a section of Torque specs. For flywheels with 3/8 inch nuts proper torques is 35-40 foot pounds. I checked my dependable Cockshutt service manual and the only notation on the 540 was lock washers are used. No torque value was given. I have seen Continental cranks that have had bolts to hold the flywheel instead of the more common method of cap screws.
