White 2-44 tire replacement

I have a White 2-44 Industrial with a loader that currently 14.9-24 industrial tires that are worn down and need to be replaced. I"m going to replace them with Ag tires for the traction but I was wondering if I can or should go to a 12.4-24 tire. I have a lot of traction problems and wasn"t sure if a narrower tire would help or be cheaper. I also have tire chains that fit at 12.4-24 tire but don"t quite fit the bitter tire. Should I got to a narrower tire? Will it fit the existing rim?

Thanks,

Have you priced tires? Where are you located? There are several farmers around here that purchased used tires and wheels off of older smaller combines that were being scrapped. Lower in cost than new tires.

We have a 1969 2-44 Industrial with the shuttle shifter and R-4 flat lug foam-filled tires. We experienced the same traction problems you are encountering. We had a brand new set of 13.6x28 tires installed, with no fluid, just wheel weights. They were worse than the R-4 tires, the difference in circumferance made the gear ration too fast for loader work, and the clutch shuddered some when taking off. The reverse speed was also too fast. We went back to the R-4's and added 900# of ballast with rear wheel weights. Seems to have fixed the traction and lift counterbalance problems. The real problem with the setup in our opinion is that the 588 loader is a might too big for the tractor. It is a tough little rig though, and will lift and load a 12ft Oliver disc easily. If you like yours, get some good 14.9 x 24's again, load them up with Rim-guard and some rear weights or a ballast box for the 3-point. It WILL make a differance. Soft sand is it's downfall. We love the tractor though, and it will be here a long time. We purchased some 8-bolt spacers from M&W to set the tires out 1 1/2 inches to make room for the chains, and we leave them on 24/7/365 for extra grip and another 150# of rear ballast.

Thanks for the info. I have also thought the loader is a bit much for the tractor as well. I guess I'll go with the same size tires with the Ag tread. I have two sets of wheels weights to put on but it sounds like I'd better load the tires too. Thats to bad. I had to flip the tires to get enough space for the chains and those things are heavy loaded and I was hoping to avoid it.

Thanks.
