Oliver 60 engine mystery .....

The other day, my friend was reassembling an Oliver 60 engine in his shop, I think the tractor is maybe mid-40's or so, 120 cubic inch I believe. The valve cover was off and I noticed in the head casting (near the valve springs) the interlocked or stylized "CEL" Continental Engine logo facing upwards. I have seen this same symbol on Continental flathead engines. He said that this Oliver engine was apparently made by Waukeshau, but I'm guessing that maybe this particular head was at least made by Continental. Maybe someone can clarify the mystery ......

Well first of all the engine in a 60 is a Waukesha 160. According to my source, Waukesha did not sell this engine to any other manufactures of engine driven equipment like with the later Oliver/Waukesha engines. Now with that being said it is not too unusual for "Name" foundries to make castings for other name companies. When I worked for Dana and we taught the Spicer clutch class we had a Detroit Diesel block for a series 60 engine. The castings we had were cast by John Deere. When I worked for the Oliver dealer we worked with a small machine shop who was an approved vendor to work for G-M's Central foundry. One time I was there and he was repairing some equipment for them. The equipment was used for making castings for Chrysler. A lot of that stuff is done on a bid base.

Every reference and data sheet I see (lots of them) says it's 120 cubic inches (or close to that), some say 2 litres which is a bit more. Nobody comes close to 160 cubic inches. Can you show me any source that says otherwise?

OK, that clears up that part of the puzzle then, and for the other part, I suppose that it is possibile that Continental could have cast parts for other engines, likely happens all the time like you said.

I know they did. I have hauled out of there. And more so did Campbell, Wyatt, and Cannon, also in Muskegon.
