WHAT IS IT???????

A friend recently inherited a Cockshutt. I am unsure exactly what series it is. I am guessing a 540. It has the cockshutt metal on it but most of it is painted green. It has a 4cly. flathead engine; 3 spd trans (I think) w/ hi-lo range; 3-point; live power; and I am thinking 28" rear rubber; wide front w/power steering. Did I guess right and how common / rare are these little tractors. thanks for your imput

It could be a 20. The 20 used a Continental engine and I think they were all flatheads back then. Does it have offset final drives and front frame of channels (similar to AC's)??

A picture would help.

Sounds like a 540, The serial number will be stamped on top of the front frame. The first letter will be an A. the second letter will be the year it is and then the serial number. That flat head is easy to get parts for.

if it is a 540 they are not too rare can usually be picked up fairly cheap in good to fair condition good little tractors heavy for thier size/power now if its a 20 they are fairly rare and definitely command a higher price lets see a pic and we will tell you what you have

The model 20 had all the transmission speeds on one lever while the 540 used two levers. One lever was you gear or direction selection and the other was a high/low as you describe you have. The all cream color 540's were made in 1958 and 1959. No 540's were made in 1960 and then production resumed in 1961 through 1962 when they were bough out by Oliver. The 61 and 62 tractors are more desireable with the red chassis and the tinwork and wheels being the cream color.

jeff oliver never bought cockshutt white did oliver had already been purchased by white by the time corporate raiders took over cockshutt then they sold it to white cockshutt never wanted to sell nor was in trouble they only made the mistake of leaving too may shares/controlling interest on the open market

Some of the cockshutt made in late 20's were built by Oliver and were painted Oliver green. Some of the very first Cockshutts were built by Allis Chalmers.

He is going to have to find tag on it or post a picture to really identify it. It could have been painted green the military, or for a municipality or somebody wanted it painted green.

yes i have seen that before and agree a serial number or something other than the rather vague description would sure help im wondering how he came to the conclusion it was a cockshutt if he dont know one model from the other as the 540 was the only "500" series model that was a utility type tractor should be pretty easy to identify from the rest

If I remeber right White bought Oliver, Cockshutt, and MM in the early 1970s. I think the tractors had the differant companies names on the sides of hood but they all said White on noise piece.

white bought cockshutt in 62 i believe oliver in 60 61? not sure on mm but i believe that was thier last purchase of these said tractors could be wrong though

I was in the Columbus branch working on the Power Booster program in the fall of 1960 when they called us all in the office and told us that Oliver was now owned by White Motor company. I think it was in early November.

Hi YOU are correct!!!!!!!!!!!.............IT is a COCKSHUTT built COCKSHUTT 540. 2500 tractors were built from '58 to '62. None were built in 1960.

Serial numbers starting with: AM 1958 built, AN 1959 built, AP 1961 built, AR 1961 built.

1958/59 trators were all one color.......HARVEST GOLD...........All 61/62 tractors were two-tone Harvest Gold with RED belly........

We have many new and used parts here for 540 and all Cockshutt Built tractors.

I concluded it is a
cockshutt by the hood and
grill. They are very
distinctive in appearance.
The only flathead i could
find in the books is 540.
Just checking with those
more familiar if that
seems right.
