Oliver gas 1850

I looked at one of these lately. I have found another that may be worth the money. How practical would a gas 1850 be to pull a 4 bottom plow over around 15 acres a year as well as disc and use to roll hay.I use a 560 farmall gas in the hay and to disc some with so I know they wont operate as cheap on fuel as a diesel. My knowledge of Oliver tractors could probably be written on a cigarette paper and have room left.lol As I explained to Rrlund my wife gives me a dirty look every time I mention buying an Oliver so I dont want to buy one that will prove that Olivers are not up to deere and IH in the using department. I appreciate any input on this matter. Thanks Lee

I can directly relate to your question. I have an 1850 gas and love it for loader work. A few years ago it was my only tractor capable of pulling a 4 bottom plow on our heavy ground. It has great power and has never let me down. I now plow with a 1755 diesel with the same plow and it uses exactly half the fuel as the 1850 gas did plowing. I always joked to my wife that I should just have a fuel tanker parked at the edge of the field. At that time I was just filling gas cans from the store. I think it has a 35 gallon tank and that won't even get you close to finishing 15 acres of moldboard plowing. I would definetly use it in a jam again becuase I think it has more snort than my 1755 diesel.
I really like it, it is just thirsty

An 1850 gas was the "big" tractor when I was growing up. It plowed several hundred acres with a 6x16 plow every spring.

Aside from it's thirst for fuel the 1850 was an excellent tractor. It had plenty of power (it easily outpaced the neighbor's 4020D, 806D, etc.) And it never needed any significant repairs. It also started easily at -10 and colder.

My son has the 1850 now; he uses to push snow from his 2,000 ft driveway.

Pretty darn good tractor, can buy tune up parts at napa. Not too bad to work on. Just thirsty like said, but doesn't sound like you have 3 weeks of mold boarding or something. I found out why mine has 3 tanks, it likes the gas.

We used an 1850 as our big tractor for quite a few years. Fuel was a lot cheaper then. The tach has over 5000 hours on it. Very few parts needed to be replaced.
The 1850 goes back to the mid 1960s. Ours now is leaking antifreeze into 2 cylinders. Will tear it down this winter for the first time.

Sorry, but I have to call BS. I had both an 1850 gas and an 806 diesel. The 806 would eat the 1850 for lunch. Not even close. Your neighbor's 806 must have been one sick puppy because a good 806 will put an 1850 to shame.
