1850 Diff. Noise

My '66 1850 has developed a clunking in the rear somewhere under the seat. It tends to stop under load, up or down hill. It is not constant, like clunk, clunk clunk type of noise. Ideas? Thanks PK.

Dad's 66 did that when I was just a little sprout. He broke a cog out of one of the bull gears.

Change the transmission oil. When you pull the plug, if it has
metal shavings or chunks of steel on it. You have a broken
gear. Had the same noises on my 2050 and I pulled chunks of
gear out of it. Mine only clunked in sixth gear.

My 1086 did that as well. Same exact symptoms, up hill or down it would go away. Turned out to be a tooth missing out of the bull gear. Sorry for no better news.

My 65' does that as well its a chip out of the bull gear.
Shouldnt be anything to worry about. Mines had it for years
and i still work it hard everytime it leaves the shed. Mines
turned up to around 120-130hp and manages a 5 bottom in
the blackest swamp dirt michigan has. Change the trans oil
to check for major shavings signifying damage before you
pull stumps with it though.

Well I need to change out the PTO clutch so I'll drain the oil then and see what comes out. Can you see the bull gears good from the back? Anyhow, all I do this time of year with it is feed the cows. It'll be a few weeks before I can get it into the shop. Have to finish up my TD-14. PK

[You will be able to see the bull gears fine with the PTO unit removed from the tractor, will need to jack up one side at a time and turn the wheel one revolution to see all the teeth.

Thanks, that's good news. I ran across a thread talking about different bull gears for standard and wide track 1850s. If so, how do you tell? PK
