1550 Build Card/Tire question

I received the build card for my 1967 diesel 1550 recently. The Floyd County Historical Society does a nice job in providing materials to decode the card.

The tractor is a row crop with an adjustable utility type front axle and the high speed transmission. The front tires are 7.5-16 and the rears were originally 15.5-38. Somewhere along the line the rear tires were changed to 16.9-38. The 16.9-38's give it a nice level look. This tractor was shipped to Quebec originally.

Although worn, I don't plan on replacing the rears anytime soon but I can imagine that the stance must have looked like it was going up hill a bit when the rears were 15.5-38.

Does anybody have a 1550 in this configuration with 7.5-16's in the front and 15.5-38's in the rear? If so, could you post a picture?

I use this tractor mostly for mowing and baling.

Interesting! There was a small salvage yard near here. The owner purchased 3 1550 tractors from Yoder & Frey that came from Quebec They all had the utility front ends and had been used as mowing tractors. They all had cabs and dual speed PTO's.

Kinda hard to tell much from it sitting back in there, but that's the only picture I have of it in the computer right now.

My 1550 had 6.50x16 when I got it and when I put the loader on I had to put the 11Lx15 on it to hold it up in soft ground. I always have to keep the center link short when I use the 3pt and a lot of times its still not short enough. Its just getting broke in at 3400 hours. This one gets used for everything. Bandit

My 15.5x38s are 95% tread or better so no changing any time soon. If I went to 16.9x38s I would have to drop gears or a bottom off the plow to pull it.

I was wondering how fast yours goes down the road? Mine goes 12 mph up hill and down hill no difference there. Now my 1550 Utility will run about 25 mph down the road I think, Its way to fast for my liking. It gets harry when it starts bouncing up and down when you try to go that fast. Ye old white knuckle flight! Bandit

Mine is the same, very fast in 5th and 6th gears. Definitely hold on tight! It can be fun but I haven't really found a good reason to use either 5th or 6th gear yet. I don't ever take it too far except up the road.

When I first got this tractor I couldn't understand why a row crop would have a high speed transmission. After comparing the speed charts between the standard and high-speed transmissions, gears 1-4 are actually slower in the high-speed transmission. Maybe that is why this tractor was configured this way.

I enjoyed receiving the build card and looking at all of the options available. My card is stamped that the tires must be Firestone. Do you think that most of these tractors were special orders by customers/dealers?

I believe that the tractors had to be special ordered to get the hi-speed transmission put in them. I do know of a local guy that did in fact special order a 1550 RC gas tractor with the hi-speed transmission to move equipment between farms. He never used it in 6th hi because it was to fast for him to control it with something behind it, So he just used 5th gear.

You can still order a tractor new with the tire brand you want. I do know several guys that will not own a tractor with Firestone tires on it and some that wont own one without them. Crazy aint it! Me as long as they are black and round hold air and aint cracked to pieces there all good! Back in the day you could buy one with all the options or a striped down model it was up to you.

The utility tractors were a little different from the rest. Being that they did not sell many 1550 utility tractor as they did as the industrial unites (2-62) with loaders and as backhoes units I would say its transmission (industrial) became standard for all of the utility tractors. Years ago if you had the money you could get it any way you wanted it. Bandit
