What could've happened to my 2-70 clutch?

Had a new clutch put in 2 years ago. Kept free play adjusted, didn't ride it, and it was working just fine. While pulling a load of round bales up a hill in 4 over a few days ago, it suddenly started to slip. Dropping to direct and under didn't change anything. Shifted down to 2 under and it managed to get up the hill. Free play didn't change. I know I've got to pull it, but I've never had this happen to any tractor before, so scratching my head.

Were the fingers on the pressure plate adjusted correctly? Your free play can be correct, but if the fingers are out of adjustment, clutch life can be sacrificed.

The rivits holding the 2 clutch friction disks to the main disk could have sheered off not changing free peddle but causing slippage. Havent had it happen on a tractor but lots of hiway trucks and racing aplications failed this way
