correct coil

I just purchased my first Cockshutt model 30. Got home and put it
on the battery charger for 20 minutes. Left the barn and returned
smelling something burning. It burned the entire inside of the coil.
What did I do wrong? And, what coil do I need now. Previous
owner stated that the tractor is converted to 12 volt. Also the burnt
coil oil and plastic landed on the nice red paint. I"ll have to touch
that up. Does anyone have the paint color code for the red and the
code for the cream paint. Where is good place to purchase paint.
Thanks for any and all help. Irv

You need to determine if the owner had an external resistor in the system and used a 6 Volt coil or no resistor and a 12 volt coil. Also like was mentioned, was the switch on or is the switch defective?
