2255 vs 1855

I have an 1855 as my big tractor now. It works pretty hard sometimes, on chisel plow and discbine. If I got a 2255 instead, how would they compare? Are there jobs the 1855 would be better at because it is lighter and more nimble? How about reliablility of the cat vs 310? I think a White would be best, but I like Oliver green.

2-135 White would be my choice for a tillage machine. If that 1855 is having trouble with a discbine, I would re-assess my discbine size. Personally, I would never rely on anything with a 310 diesel in it for heavy use,"updates" or not. I know, they sound great and all, I've just been victimized too many times by them.
2255 prices are beginning to be pretty collector-driven so it may be difficult to find a nice one reasonably priced. Just my 2 cents.

well truth be told there is no comparison between them, i mean the one is the biggest oliver ever built. the 2255 has the v-8 cat, 3150 or 3208, with 570ci to 630ci respectively which is a drastic improvement over the 310. also the 310 olivers are the tractors people try to avoid or convert to a 5.9 cummins while the v-8 cats can last forever. in todays standards the 1855 is more of a chore tractor or light field work while the 2255 is a big brute of a tractor which, if you desire, can be adjusted to well over 200 hp, but i wouldn't attempt to go over 180. now if you want whites are nice to from the 2-135 to 2-180 and these tractors have the hercules 471 and the 3208 v-8 cat, both nice tractors. so if things are as hard as you say they are for the 1855 go bigger.

Never a fan of any V-8 diesel, too much vibration too little lugging ability. Had a 3208, didn't care for it. How hard is your 18 working? Guess, I'd need more info on what you consider working hard. Also, Is every thing up to snuff.....injectors, fuel pump, oil pressure, turbo?

If nothing more than heavy field work....2255 or 2-135/155

If needing tractor for other lighter duty jobs, you'd be better off with what you have or a 2-110 ect.

We pull a 13' Hesston moco with a 1755 in 3rd over and rarely shift down due to lack of horses.

I pull a 10' John deere with impellers. In heavy hay the tractor smokes hard the hole time, and 4th gear is a struggle. Also some chisel plowing with 7 shanks. The 1855 is nice because it is not too big to rake hay, pull wagons, or any other job. Has been rebuilt with updates, and has oil cooler, but still makes me nervous. I have never been around a 2255, but was thinking if it wasn't too big for the small jobs, it would have plenty of power for the harder jobs.

I would think the 18 was too big to rake hay with, but that's just me. I've seen others do it with bigger yet just because that's what they have. I rake with either our 1600 or Massey 285.

Anyway.... I'd think the 2255 would be much better on the tillage aspect. Don't know for haying. I pull our 14' hydraswing haybine with either our Massey 285 (roughly 80 HP) or our 1855 (dynoed at 105) and while the 285 works harder, it works quite well. I've pulled a 5 shank subsoiler with our 1855 in the past, ansd we've pulled 7 shank disc chisels as well. It's a load and 5 would be better, but it's what we could find to rent. A 2255 would probably pull a 9 shank chisel.

Helped a man farm for 34 years . He had a 2255 with a 3150 and a 2-180 with a 3208 cat in them. Bought both of them new.Had absolutely no engine problems with either one. Was still useing them until 2005 when he died. Farmed 1000 acres with them for 30 years. When everone else in the area was buying new tractors all the time he just kept farming with his cat powered tractors and bought land instead. I still think the true 4 digit Olivers were the best looking tactors ever made

Used to have a 4-150, 3208 Cat, bought used with 1100 hrs, at 1200 hrs rods out the side of block going down a rough road at less than 1/2 throttle replaced the engine with Cat rebuilt, tractor was a 1974, this happened in 1980 and Cat people said it had original rod and main brngs, and supposedly paid 1/2 of rebuild, BUT was without tractor for a month, got it home the day after we finished planting.

the Hercules engine in the 2-135/2-155 is 478 c.i. the 2655 was the biggest oliver i beleive

I have a 2-85 white that I use for haying. I can run 9' mowers without her struggling and I haven't been into the engine and she has farmed for quite a few years. I wonder if something is off a bit in your 1855 of maybe it's not working as hard as you think.
I'll agree with Don that tractors this size are big to rake with in my opinion. I like smaller tractors for raking and tedding but I have used it in a pinch.

We have a 2655 oliver with the 800ci. LP I would say it would pull any thing u put on it. Might be for sale for the right price.

i just looked it up and technically they are both the biggest. the 2255 had more pto hp than the 2655 and the 2655 had more drawbar hp than the 2255.

They both have their advantages and faults.
I have both the only thing the 1855 doesn't do well on is pull a 15 foot GP no-till drill and the 2255 doesn't even know it's there.
If you want the 2255 get don't get rid of the 1855 you'll like them both.
