1755 hydraul drive unit moving

I rebuilt my 310 diesel, put it back in with a new
PTO drive hub and shaft. Putting in the engine,
the drive sprokets are not perfectly level, but I
did everything the same, (unfortunately not the
first time I removed this engine). I put in the
new drive shaft, had to "tap" the last little bit,
when cranking the motor, the entire hydraul unit
moves up and down. It moves from the drive
sproket all the way forward to where the bell
housing connects to the rear of the motor. I
haven"t started it yet because I am fearful of
that motion. Any ideas on why it is moving?
 
Why it's moving-- is the fact that when you "tapped" the shaft into its final location the center of the pto hub on the flywheel was forced off center. When the engine is cranked the effect internally is like a camshaft lobe and is causing your hydraul-shift to move around.

A quick check to see if the above is true is to yank the pto shaft and crank the motor. If there is some scuffing on the shaft, there is no need to turn the motor.

Before you inserted the shaft you should have had the sprockets parallel and on center. The manual shows how to do the proper alignment with various shim thicknesses.

What I do is insert the pto shaft into the 3 speed before I drop the motor in. Just to make sure murphy isn't lurking. Good luck.
 
I was able to pull the shaft and cranked the motor. It still moves, but not as bad. I think I need to remove the chain from the coupler and crank. How does the PTO hub get off center. It is bolted to the flywheel? If it is off center, how does one get it back on center? Or are you saying it isn"t on "center" to begin with because the engine may not be leveled?
 
Right now I would say your only problem is a mis-aligned coupling. I would shim the engine mounts until the alignment is good then most likely you have eliminated the movement. Your PTO hub should still be centered OK.

I worked on a 1855 where the owner had forcibly "slugged" the PTO shaft into its final position and the result was a destroyed PTO hub. The end result was the hub being off center which really made a racket when running. I had this experience in the back of my mind when I was referring to your problem.

Thanks. I now understand your concern. I didn"t "slug" it into position, but tapped it because the thought was "new" into "new" might be a tight fit. I was able to get it out with out too much trouble. Will try shimming it. Thanks.
