Pull Starting a 1850

Can you pull start a 4 digit Oliver with the two or three speed. I always thought you couldn't but others say that they have done it.

First you need a good hot battery then pull the tractor in direct or over. After the tractor is rolling, in gear and main clutch engaged, crank the engine to build hydraulic pressure in the hydraul-shift. Once the hydraul clutch is at pressure you are all locked up and no longer need help from the starter.

To answer you correctly a hydra power can be pull started in direct drive. The best way is to put trans in 6th gear and hydra power in low and as soon as you're moving push the hydra power in and it should turn engine over. As far as the over under it will not work unless you crank the engine with the starter to get pressure for the clutches I just went out and tried a 1755 over/under and nothing. Gas or diesel shouldn't matter as they are the same units.

Good clean answer. I think I was kinda on the same page as you, so what you are saying is you don't have to crank the engine when pull starting a 3 speed?

I'll try tomorrow, but i think I figured out you can pull start a over/under. When I was pulling this I went to shift gears on dead tractor and killed towing tractor. I think if you put the overunder in direct drive and trans in 6th gear, then while moving push the clutch in for a few seconds and release it will start. By pushing in clutch there is enough drag on hyd clutch in over under to turn input side and pump so your clutch's will engage and turn mtr. over. I'll try this in the morning and post here.

When the starter went out on our 1750 with O/U we just parked it on a hill and put in 6th overdrive and let the clutch out at about 6 MPH.

Gary you are on the right track. I was thinking you had to put it in overdrive and yes like you said you need to push the clutch petal down and get it oving say 50 feet before you pop the clutch. We used to do that with new tractors but the guys out in the set up area did it. I did it a few times but was trying to remeber which range you use but I think it is overdrive.

We just did that with my cousins 2-135 White. They think it is the solenoid that is bad so we had to pull it as it is the on they use on the chopper. We used 5th direct....pulled it about 10 feet, let out the main clutch and it started right up.

The answer is as allen stated above. put it in either direct or over in 6th gear and pull a few feet with clutch in then release and will start

Here is what we hope to pull start. They just got back from California. They liked weight. The 1950 weighs 20,000# with the fluid filled tires.

That's a 1950 with a detroit diesel, if it's been sitting you better make sure the emergency shutt off on the blower works or be sure rack is free or when it starts it may wind up and throw parts around the neighborhood

Put r-2 tires on that tractor and take the weights off and no fluid in the tires and you have about the best, hardest pulling heavy mud tractors there is.Down here in rice country they were hard to beat!25 more horses would have been nice though. The 2150 we had was just too heavy.

Looks like you'll have a pretty valuable pair when restored. Love those 1950s with the detroits

The weights are off and listed on YT. The tractors came from California so even though the paint is bad, all of the controls are loose. We hope to get them started when we have a chance. I would like to keep the 1950 but I already have a 2 wheel drive. My son will be listing them after he gets them going. I also have a 1855 FWA coming that I will keep. It has been setting for 35 years so I will be asking what to check before I try to start it up.
