Yes, by all means, if you have a Baldwin number for the correct filter, please send it along on the website. It would be a big help to all of us with the 550.

AFAIK, no one aftermarket makes a hydraulic filter for the S55 or 550 with the cast iron filter housing. Local NAPA carries Baldwin and they could not come up with the right one. Catalog listings lead to the one he got or a shorter one with metal ends. The factory filter is just an element with no ends, similar to a toilet paper tube except smaller. I would be interested in your Baldwin number to see if it is right, got to be a much cheaper alternative if it is true.

I went to eBay and bought a filter that had the right number, but it was certainly NOT the right filter. It was at least 9" long and nearly 3" in diameter. Just way too big. There must be some mistake in the numbers that are being circulated by various publications and readers. I am all ears to find out a cheaper alternative to the cost that is as much as 66 dollars in one publication I saw. I also wonder if the filter can be washed out with a solvent, dried, and reused.

Baldwin F817-F.

You can not seem to get it on the Baldwin crossover site. Acklands gets them in for me.

That filter only fits early Super 55 with draft selector hydraulics and side filter. It will not fit late Super 55(like mine) or 550.

There are some on eBay now. Zoom in on the box to read the text.
