alternator 6 to 12 volt conversion

Just bought a 1949 Oliver 77 Row Crop. It does not have a generator installed at this time but I"m going to convert to negative ground 12 volt system with a single wire Delco S10 alternator. I do have two Oliver generators that came off an industrial 88 and another 77 but they both need work so I"m just going to replace all the wiring, cables, etc. I plan on keeping the engine side panels so I"m wondering if I will have enough space to install the Delco alternator? Has anyone done this conversion and kept the side panels? I am also going to add electronic ignition module, hot coil, new 12 volt lights, aux power module, etc. Any recommendations on best Electronic Module for Olivers? Any help appreciated.

The Delco will not fit under the panel, best bet is a Nipondenso (ND) used on a lot of foriegn cars (Suzuki, Chevy Sprint etc.)

Why not get a new rebuilt 12 volt from an Oliver Diesel, late Super or three digit and buy a new wiring harness from Korves? The wiring harness doesn't care if it's 6v or 12. It all hooks up the same and looks great. I did it to my 66 and 77 both.

How about a Hitachi from 78 to early 80's Datsun/Nissan. Size should be close and would be considerably cheaper

Stiener Tractor Parts sells a small one wire alternator that fits perfectly on the 66 or 77, and behind the panel. I have used them three different times. Just run the wire through the amp gauge and on to the battery. Be sure to use a resisted coil if your changing from 6 to 12 volt neg ground, or you will burn up points and condensers rapidly.

I have fit the 1 wire delcos under 3 tractors with side curtains. They will fit and are $45 at auto zone.

I personally like to use the 3 wire alternator because it maintains a high voltage at the battery and provides the circuits with around 14.5 volts. This makes brighter lights and a constant stable voltage at the ignition coil.

This is a controversial topic as the 1 wire does have several downfalls vs only one advantage which is ease of wiring.

This website below explains it simply.
