setting brakes

Not sure how to set the brakes on my 550. I see the two springs, I see the 2 notched metal strips, not sure what they mean and how to use both effectively.

Push down the brake pedal(s) with your foot. Manually reach down and put the metal strips in the notch. To release (if the springs work) all you have to do is push down on the pedals with your foot and the brakes will release.
