Marvel-Schebler carb problem - advice needed

I've just pulled the carb on my 88 today with the intent of a full strip, clean and rebuild with a full carb kit. I discovered the primary source of the running problems with my tractor.

The throttle shaft is worn oval and rattles around in the bushing. This thing's got a serious air leak and beyond a simple recon.

Are new throttle shafts for these carbs made? Can the housings be reamed and new bushings installed? Is this regular carb shop stuff or specialist?

Or do I just buy a new Zenith and save myself the hassle?

Don't buy a Zenith! I have bought two, and their both junk. I ended up buying a couple Marvel Schebler's on E-Bay, and rebuilt my own.

Get yourself a new throttle shaft first. When you have the carburetor back together and on get yourself a good vacuum gauge and use it to check the engine performance. Questions? J.

I had the same problem with the throttle shaft
of a 14 horse Kohler engine on a Cub Cadet.
NAPA Auto Parts had a kit, where you drilled the
shaft hole and pressed in new bushings. I don't
know if such a kit is available for tractor Carbs.

I took a little string type graphite packing made for a water valve or water pump. Seems to work, I am sure many mechanics on this site would wince, but a little shot of starting fluid around the pivot would suggest it is a tight fit.

doing it correctly requires that the carb should be
set up and bored for bushings and then reamed to fit
the shaft in a Bridgeport mill to assure that the
bushings are parallel to each other , I do them in
my shop email if interested .
