1850 With Perkins Surging?

I have a new problem with my 1850 Perkins surging when first started up. It does this at 1500 RPM and above for 10 or 15 minutes then settles down and runs fine. I changed out all the filters but it still does it. I did forget to check the screen in the primary pump. Any ideas? PK

The 1850's usually had this problem surging. If you go search thru the posts, you will find a lot of info. My guess would be it is sucking air somewhere before the inlet of the injection pump. The main issue was the bronze gear would wear out creating a lot of backlash, jerking the governor and creating a surge, especially at higher RPM's. The only way to get rid of this is to replace the expensive gear. The best thing to do is update the gear and pump drive to the style like in a 2-105.

I checked the primary pump screen and it was clean. I did bale 20 acres and roaded the tractor 8 miles to the next field and it ran smooth and strong! I'll find out if it still surges this morning when I start baling. I did find the bleeder on the primary filter loose and weeping. I'll keep that gear in mind if this goes that direction. I'll let you know how it starts and runs today. PK

Well it ran fine baling all day. It was the bleeder on the primary filter. Once I tightened that up all the bad symptoms went away. Thanks for the help, PK.
