550 and 4 row cultivator

I"ve asked questions about Oliver 550s before, one of these days I"ll pick one up. Was just wondering if a 550 has the 3pt lift capacity to make use of a 4 row cultivator and a rotary hoe of equal size, or is the tractor more suited to 2 row equipment?

How many gangs on the four row? We had acouple of 6 row cultivators behind Super or 550 tractors. They all had the high pressure relief valve installed.

I cultivated a lot of corn 30 years ago with a Super 55 and a 4 row Oliver cultivator. I don"t think you"ll have a problem with 4 row equipment, unless you have an especially heavy brand of cultivator.

6 row cultivators behind a 550, I would have never considered that. Must be some good mellow ground in your area. I do suppose the number of gangs would make a differance on the power requirement.

It was not a power requirementm but a lifting requirement. Yes and the one I am thinking of was behind a supe 55. Also that area has some very good soil. A lot of special crops (green beans, tomatoes, peppers, etc. grown in that neighborhood. The bar where thegangs mounted on was also an early bar that was hollow and not the later solid bar.

Please explain the use of the high pressure relief valve and how it helped. The hollow bar would certainly save a lot of weight.
