77 gas tank question

Gambles

I pulled a 77 gas out of the fence row and it will be my next project. I noticed that between the engine and the gas tank is a nicely fitted sheet of asbestos, probably 1/2" thick, obviously put there to stop the gas from getting hot and boiling out. Question: Was this a factory-installed piece or did some farmer add this? Just by looking at it, it looks like the factory did it, as it is put in and looks nice. Still, I'm sure there there is no factory replacement part number for a piece of asbestos so after some thought, I bet it is a farmer-added piece. Since asbestos won't be put back in to replace it, would anybody have a suggestion as a replacement? I'm thinking maybe a piece of slate...
