super 55 steering box

On the super 55 steering box on the casting that holds the tube for steering shaft has a 1/4" hole on each side. What are the holes for, it looks like a grease zerk might fit, but the holes are dead ended. Pete

Are you talking about the holes on the side plates? Those are for adjusting the steering gear back lash. It should have a lock nut that screws onto the adjuster, which has a slotted end. The filler/test plug is on the side of the right side of the steering tube where it bolts to the gear box. It originally called for oil, but they always leak. So use corn head grease. It doesn't leak and doesn't freeze in cold weather.

I have a 55 steering box on the bench and went out to look for the mentioned holes. Couldn"t find "em. On mine, which has a worm shaft housing that is about 13 1/4 long to the top of the housing there is one hole that is plugged by a 1/4" screw that could be used to lube the upper worm shaft bearing. Is this some kind of a modification?

The fitting for the adding the grease is at the casting at the end of the steering shaft tube where it bolts to the steering gear housing. It is on the right side of the casting. It was originally filled with oil, but fill it with the corn head grease. The opening at the top of the shaft should have a grease zerk in it for greasing the top bearing on the steering shaft.
