1750- transmission input shaft/sprocket

Replaced the chain coupler this weekend. What fun. Any way, while it was off, it seemed the alignment of the two sprockets were good, but the sprocket on the input to trans shaft was loose. I could slide it forward and back on the shaft close to 3/8of an inch. When the sprocket was up tight to the O/U output sprocket, as is needed to attach chain, I could rotate trans sprocket about 1/8" of a rotation before it grabbed the shaft. If I slid the sprocket back on shaft towards the trans, it was tight, but was then too far away from O/U sprocket. What holds that sprocket tight to the shaft? Will Ineed to replace that trans input shaft? How hard is it do do? I am assuming to change the sprocket if spines wore and shaft or sprocket, I need to remove engine. Could some one walk me thought this? Pics would be really appreciated. Would like to get 1st hay in, and then get the ol girl in the shed and fixed to sure this vibration issue, paint, and sell.
I should add thatthe sprocket on the over under output shaft was tight, no slide, no slop

Sounds like transmission shaft splines are shot. You will have to pull motor and over and under unit as shaft will have to come out the front. You have some work ahead of you.Not bad if you have hoist and proper snap ring pliers but fuel tank steering and dash assy. shifter etc. have to come off to make working room. The biggest thing you need is book to make sure shaft oil collector and teflon rings are in the right order. Not and easy job to talk you through.Scott

I have a 1650 that had the same problem, there is a gear in the pto drive with the same splines and size, took it to a good welder, he welded the two together and it went on the input far enough to get fresh spline. Pete

You will have to change the transmission input shaft. This is a major repair. Did it a few years ago. Changed bearings while in the tranny also. They say to use agco shaft, not aftermarket. Guy on here named mkuhns helped me a lot. His help was invaluable.
