Was wandering if anyone knows how to find out if the oliver 80
has the big pistons in it vs. The smaller bore without pulling the
pan and mesuring? Was there a specific year or serial number?
Thanks duane o.

As far as I know, the gas ones were the smaller pistons and the KD versions the larger. High altitude versions may have been fitted with the larger pistons, too.

There may be a difference in head height for the different compression ratios, so push rods may be different length (valves will be). Manifolds for the KD are deeper, too, but not much use for the above, necessarily.

But all that said, the liners and pistons could have been changed at some point - although less likely on these older tractors, I would have thought.

You could compare the parts book item numbers for each model.

The alternative to pulling the pan would be to remove the head! Or you might be able to get a measurement through the crankcase inspection covers.

I am working on an 80 motor for someone.

I pulled down one motor and although it was marked KD it had been converted. It had 3 flat top 4.5" pistons marked C228C. Those are not in the parts book I have. He found a 4.5" flat top piston that they said was M&W but the marking doesn't say that directly. This piston is significantly heavier than the 228C pistons so much so I am working on balancing them.

It also had one flat top 4.25" piston marked C228F (gas piston). The head showed it had probably dropped a valve and I am guessing 228C pistons weren't available.

The other motor was a KD motor with 4.5" cupped pistons marked C228E.

The chamber size on the gas and KD heads is different. KD is supposed to be 4.5 compression ratio and gas 5.5. I don't have everything back yet but i have estimated the 4.5" bore (flat) with the gas head at 6.2. I think I estimated the gas head with KD piston at around 5.8 but I am a little fuzzy on that.

The Oliver markings are cast into the inner base of the pistons and could probably be viewed through the inspection covers. (You might have to clean some crude off.....)

Thanks guys that helps me out quite a bit. Now to find a good 41/2 bore piston and lower liner sealing rings without buying 3 tractors hahaha. Duane.

Duane if you need any 80's or parts let me know, got a bunch here I want to get rid of, there are some in all conditions.

According to my Older 80 parts book the 228-C pistons were "high altitude" pistons. It also stated they were seldom ordered. I would like to get some measurements from you while you have the engine(s) apart. How can I contact you? Thanks J.

I guess email is about the best way. It should be open when I post this. If not I will try something else.

I won't be able to get you anything until next week but what do you need?

I didn't find them in the Floyd county copy.

I haven't tried them yet but Olsen gaskets supplied round cross section O'rings.

These were made from stock material and you can see where they were glued or bonded together.

They are somewhat thicker horizontally than the old ones I pried out but I don't think they are as thick vertically.

It's an interesting set.

I guess you used modern view because it did on classic.

That said, and I think this keep the spammers out.
