550 steering

My 550 steers easy to the right but real hard to the left. It has new tie rods, spindle bushings and kingpin in the center. It does not have power steering. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Its probably in the steering box itself. Water tends to run down the steering shaft into the box, rusts out the lower bearing so the block with the recirculating balls can move up and down the shaft with enough clearance to lose some of the balls; meanwhile, the rollers from the disintegrated bearing are moving around in there too.

Don't use the tractor until you fix it- IIRC, the balls at the top of the nut are for the left side steering, so you've lost enough of them that its steering hard to the left. When enough balls are moving around freely in the steering box it will bind up, and the steering will lock, with even more interesting results, especially if you're going down the road in 6th gear.

JU, my 550 was steering hard to the left and it turned out to be the drag ling end bolt that bolts to the Pittman arm rubbing on the trans case, ground a little off it to clear and end of problem. Chuck
