sorry for the long post, but ill try to get as much info as possible out at one time. my father in law bought a 1855 oliver at absolute auction over the winter. paid 4100. started and ran super, new tires all around. a few leaks here and there but nothing major. just brought it in the shop today. this tractor always held 50 lb oil preasure. we have moved it around here and there for 5 months. i changed filters and refilled with dello 400 15w40. still held 50 psi. after changing all other filters, hooked up to disc harrow. in one trip in field, oil psi droped to ten, and temp was in the red. field was 200 yrds long, disc were 18 feet wide. when i dropped oil plug, about one once antifreeze came out first. the rest of oil was black. when he checked oil at sale, it was full and black. i thought he got a good tractor but now not sure, do we need an overhaul? any input gratefull. pork

The coolant in the oil, my first guess would be the liner o-rings, they had a good habit of that. As far as the sudden drop in oil pressure that sounds to me like a spun bearing. Before I would open her up I would advise a oil analysis, it will show the coolant but you already knew that just be aware of spikes in the metals.

As stated it could have a bad O ring causing the coolant leak. As for the drop in oil pressure the 1855 was never ment to have 15W40 run in it, It just thins down to much. The older diesels run on strait 30W diesel oil. I tried what everybody told me to run in my 1550 diesel, 15W40 Rotella. Well it started allright then after 15 min or so it lost oil pressure and I shut it down and drained the oil, It was thin as water. I went back to my old oil strait 30W and new filter and we were good to go with good oil pressure after an hour of hard workin, Lesson learned. The oil you are getting now like the 15w40 is made for a new diesel engine not one built in the 70s. If the 1855 has a lot of hours on it, Its loose and thin oil is the last thing you want in it to hold oil pressure. I know this may be a pain to try but its worthy a try to find a good strait 30W or 40W to try. I hope this helps. Bandit
